You guys have completely blown away my (any everyone elses) expectations. I want to thank everyone for being so generous - we've had donations ranging from $0.99 to $200. That just goes to show you that the amount doesn't matter, your support is what matters. What's this all about?
We're trying to get a chunk of change together to spring-board TTNet into some new hardware as well as get search paid for. After admin got the fubar'd server back up and running, she's no longer limping along - but there's still a good area for performance improvement. Additionally hardware upgrades will ensure implementing extended functionality (*cough* wiki *cough*) won't have a deleterious effect on site performance.I set an arbitrary goal of $2k a couple days ago, and the TTNet community responded by blasting right past that mark in true enthusiast fashion.
Here are some specifics:
- Performance enhancements: new hardware *is* on the horizon. I can't be super specific, but faster/more cores, faster/larger harddrives connected to a faster/larger bus, more memory, etc - it is confirmed this money will go in part to hardware specific performance upgrades. The $2k goal wouldn't cover the entirety of such an upgrade, it would certainly get things moving though.
- The new search engine: It's much faster now, but it's currently on trial basis and eventually needs to be paid for. Good software costs good money =). This will be a retroactive performance upgrade ;).
- The wiki: a wiki is an online encyclopedia, with fully dynamic cross referencing, updating, discussion, and user groups. One current issue with the info stored on ttnet is that it isn't in a central data repository, it isn't cross referenced, and tech articles cannot be edited for correctness and added on to. The wiki will allow (approved) users to update and populate the knowledge base in real time, correct mistakes when they are found, extend technical articles, archive important Z information all the while saving each revision for posterity/accountability and allowing users to discuss changes and updates. The wiki is free, and will not cost anything to implement, however hardware specific performance upgrades will ensure that it does not have any ill effects on the current forum performance. The wiki would be an add-on. The current format would not go away or change.

This is voluntary and meant to be a fun way to springboard into some hardware upgrades and get search paid for.
